Step 1

Reflect on What Energises You

  1. Identify Your Passions
What activities make you feel excited or “in the zone”?
Consider what you would do for free, just because it brings you joy.
  2. Explore Childhood Interests
Think back to what interested you as a child – often, these early loves can hold clues.
Write down any themes or interests from that time.
  3. Notice Patterns in Daily Life
Track moments that make you feel energised or inspired. This can be anything: working with others, being outdoors, solving problems, or creating something new.
Journaling can help capture these patterns over time.

Step 2

Identify Your Core Values

  1. Define Your Beliefs
Ask yourself, what do you stand for? Values like integrity, kindness, or growth can guide you toward work and relationships that align with your purpose.
  2. Rank Your Values
List 5-10 values that resonate with you, then rank them in order of importance. This will clarify what’s most essential to you in life.
  3. Check for Value Alignment
Reflect on whether your current life aligns with these values. If not, what small steps could you take to bridge the gap?

Step 3

Take Action Toward a Purposeful Life

  1. Experiment and Explore
Try out different activities, volunteer opportunities, or new projects. Getting hands-on will give you valuable insights.
Embrace failure as a learning experience, and don’t rush the process.
  2. Seek Feedback from Others
Talk to people who know you well and ask what strengths or qualities they see in you, and what they think you would be good at.
Join groups or communities of people pursuing similar interests for support and perspective.
  3. Reflect and Adjust
Regularly revisit your purpose journey. It takes time to clearly identify your purpose. It’s also okay if your purpose evolves over time; life experiences can reshape your priorities.
  4. Write Down your Purpose
A good formula for writing your purpose is your contribution + so that + the results. Try to write down your draft purpose. For example, an English Teacher might write, “I help people learn English so that they can prosper in life”
  5. Seek Professional Input
Coaching can help you identify your purpose. Here at SCB Executive Coaching we help our clients to identify their purpose – their why – so that they can thrive. Questions for Reflection

  • What would I do if I had unlimited resources?
  • How would I want to be remembered?
  • Who do I admire, and why? What qualities or achievements draw me to them?

Final Thoughts

Finding your purpose is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself, and remember that your purpose may change with time and experience. Keep exploring, reflecting, and connecting with what truly matters to you.
